As you may have noticed, we’ve had a major construction project in the garden this past year. It was to install our very own on-site water source! For decades gardeners at 6BC have had to access water from the street hydrants.

Many thanks respectively go to GreenThumb and the Parks Dept., City Council, the Mayor’s office and the contractor, Ruben’s Group, Inc. for initiating, funding, overseeing and completing this project.

Our neighbors on our eastern side were also repointing their brickwork last year. As a result, a landscaping/ rat abatement project along the north eastern wall of the garden (behind the fish pond) had to be delayed. Please bear with us as we put all these sections of the garden back together in a new and purposeful way!

Our fish have not heeded social distancing at all this year and now we have way too many of them for our pond to accommodate.
6BC member, Zoe spearheaded the rescue effort along with help from Paul, Kenneth and Janene. It was tricky but we managed to catch around 14 fish and they have gone to their new home at Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn.

In a normal year community gardens are required to be open for 20 hours per week from April 1st though October 31st. This year gardens were unable to open for much of the season due to statewide COVID-19 restrictions. Since our garden had not been open for very long this year we wanted to do something special for the community.

We decided to decorate the garden for Halloween, our last official open day of 2020. 6BC provided a fun and safe Halloween activity in the form of a spooky garden walk-through. “The Haunted Garden”.

October 31st, 2020 was a chilly but brilliant Fall day. Over 200 of our neighbors visited 6BC’s Haunted Garden. Treats were available - they proved just as popular with adults as with the children!

Park’s Dept. and GreenThumb COVID regulations were observed such as social distancing amongst groups, collecting visitors’ contact info and mask-wearing.

A lot of fun was had by all!

Participatory Budgeting in @CarlinaRivera 's District 2 has launched and we’re on the ballot!

Anyone over 11 years old in our district can vote on how we spend $1 million of city funding for local projects.

6BC GARDEN desperately needs its own water source. Currently we must get water from a fire hydrant across the street or use watering cans from filled rain barrels. Please help us to make our community garden even more beautiful as well as safer for our all-volunteer members.

#ParticipatoryBudgeting (PB) is a democratic process where community members directly decide how to spend part of their district's public budget. Residents propose projects for district improvement.

The projects are researched and selected for a ballot. The 11 finalists are then presented to the community for a vote. The 5 projects with the most votes get funded by their Council Member's discretionary funds, which are monetary resources Council Members allocate based on their understanding of community needs.

The voting runs from March 30 through April 7. 6BC is a finalist in District 2. Residents of District 2 will be able to vote on line, by phone, or at polling places set up across the district (including a table at 6BC!) Anyone who lives in District 2 and is at least 11 years old or in the 6th grade can vote. @PB_NYC #PBNYC

"Miragers", on view from Oct. 20-Nov.3 featuring sculptural installations by five artists in collaboration with 6BC. Described as "a relaxed exploration of magic and mirage". An Opening was held on Oct. 20 from 2-6pm. Tea and refreshments were served. Matthew Noonan played guitar from our library balcony. It was a wonderful Fall day!
Artists: Kevin Evans, Valerie Kamen, Molly Lieberman, Emmanuela Soria Ruiz and August Neuscheler.

We have had solar power at 6BC for almost two decades. It powered things like the pond pump and some electric lights in the tool shed.
The panels and batteries were recently upgraded and now we are able to capture and store even more electricity for use.
A big thanks to Kris, Katherine, Charlie, Nick, Matt our Board, our donors and everyone who helped with the research and installation.
The latter was done on some of the hottest (& sunniest) days of the year.

On May 12 we held an Opening for the @the_collage_garden NYC installation at 6BC. May 12 also happened to be World Collage Day!

Over 100 artworks submitted by artists from 25 different countries were exhibited.

On view through the end of June, 2018.

On April 29 we held an Opening for Kathy Creutzburg's sculpture installation, "Wayward" (2017, steel & wood, 36"x16"x18").

It will be on view at the garden throughout the summer.

Kathy Kreutzburg is a public artist who uses the landscape to inspire her sculptures, mosaics and paintings. She credits her creative origins to her involvement with community gardens in the East Village during the 1990's.

Elizabeth Liptzin DuBose is the descendant of an immigrant family who lived in the tenement that once stood where our garden is located.
In 1909 her grandfather, then five year old David Liptzin, traveled from Russia to America along with his older brother, mother & uncle. They were to join his father, Benjamin Liptzin who had emigrated to the USA several years earlier.
This Certificate of Naturalization dated February 28, 1912 shows that the family - Benjamin, Fannie, Solomon and younger brother David were all residents of 628 E. 6th Street.
A special thank-you to Benjamin Liptzin’s great-granddaughter, Elizabeth for sharing her family connection to our garden site and for her gift in her ancestors’ memory.

“Loisaida” is still a diverse community of immigrants today. We honor their contribution to the neighborhood and to our garden.
