6Bc MEMBER committees

Our committees are instrumental in keeping 6BC Garden green and growing.  Each committee is mentored by a 6BC board member. Each committee is responsible for electing its own chair and setting its own meeting schedule.
Carpentry & Brickwork
Occasionally, things fall apart. Especially the brick paths and walls. And railings, and structures. We need to give our paths, walls, railings and tool sheds some love. Help keep them safe and beautiful!

Composting and Soil Maintenance
Rich compost and healthy soil are essential to the well-being of our plants. Compost has to be turned into healthy soil. And the soil already on the plots has to be nurtured and supported, to make sure it has the right balance of nutrients to meet the needs of our plants.

Events Committee
6BC depends on membership dues, donations and events for its upkeep and community outreach programs. What upkeep, you ask? Well, plants, tools, fertilizer, lumber, etc. doesn't come cheap.  And some community outreach programs have expenses, too. Here's where you come in. We need people to create events that will bring people into our garden, benefit the community, and raise money. We are already a popular venue for weddings and photo shoots, but we want to do more in the way of giving back to our neighbors. We also want to do garden workshops for our members. So, if you have ideas for events and programs, this is the committee for you!

Social Media
We are proud of our garden, and we need your help to let people know about us, and our events. This committee is responsible for maintaining the 6BC website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, and generally getting the word out to the community about our garden!

Plot Steward Committee
This committee is open to plot stewards and those members interested in stewarding and maintaining a plot. The focus will be on issues concerning the maintenance of plots, support for plots whose stewards cannot maintain them for a period of time, what plantings work (or not), etc. The committee will also undertake, in collaboration with the Plant Identification Committee, to document and create a photographic seasonal record of the plants in their plots that can be referenced in future years.

Grants Committee

6BC Garden receives no funding from any federal, state or city agencies. Our only funding is donations and event fees. Every now and then, however, we encounter a situation, such as rebuilding our compost bin, that requires more money than we take in. So, we need to look for grants. This year, as we face several major repair projects, we need people who are willing to research and submit grant proposals.

Plant Identification
The name says it all. 6BC, after many years, is embarking on the ambitious plan of creating an inventory of the plants in our garden. What plants do we have in our garden?  How should they be cared for? What are their water, soil, pruning and fertilizing requirements? This committee will also coordinate with the social media committee to publish their results on our website and Facebook page.

Ponds Maintenance
We have one big pond (with fish!) and two small ponds in our garden. We love our ponds and want to keep them healthy and mosquito-free. This committee's responsibility is to make sure all the ponds maintain adequate water levels, that the water and the areas around the ponds are kept free from weeds and garbage, that the waterfall functions, and that the fish are fed.
